British screenwriter Fernley Phillips was first turned on to the number 23 enigma by a
friend. And much like Walter Sparrow, the lead character in The Number 23, Phillips was
quickly drawn in to the mystery of the number and its meaning : "My friend mentioned the number 23 enigma, which led me to read authors such as futurist Robert Anton Wilson, who wrote things like The Illuminatus Trilogy,” recalls Phillips, who earned his first screenplay sale with The Number 23. “I began to open up to the numerical phenomena, as well as memory repression, hypnosis and the power of suggestion. I decided to incorporate all these subjects into a story."

 Obsession story |
This psychological thriller left me breathless! The superb performance by Jim Carrey makes us feel for Walter Sparrow, the man who has an insane obsession for the number 23. The story is well told and delivers all the expectations for suspens. More than your average paranoia movie, this one packs a few surprises. Pay attention to the dialogues and cinematography which can sometimes remind you of Sin City and carry important clues to solving this mystery. The director's choice to use two distinct kind of visual moods guides the viewer through this disturbing story. The editing sustains the growing tension and with an explosive finale the movie triumphs through it's writing and direction.
