The story centers the encounter of four people who will get to know each other, will learn to love each other, will live with each other. Camille is a cleaning lady who loves to paint. Philibert (Laurent Stocker) is a young aristocrat obsessed by history, he is shy, likes to be alone and lives in an apartment that belongs to his parents. Franck (Guillaume Canet) is a cook, very masculine and endearing. And Paulette, Franck’s beloved grandmother, is an old woman, fragile and funny. They will learn to help each other and to get over their doubts and their grief together. They will learn that together, everything is easier. |

 Realistic romance |
Somehow, when it comes to love stories, it’s pretty rare to find a movie showing a true realism. More often then ever the characters, and the way they act, are much to romantic to be real, which prevents us from identifying ourselves to them, or should I say: prevents us from implicating ourselves into what they’re supposed to feel.
Ensemble, c’est tout (Hunting and Gathering) doesn’t fall into that category. The characters’ personalities, their behaviours and the situations are similar to real life – considering that you know someone of the same type than one of the three persons in the movie, which makes probably the difference between those who like the film from those who find it pretty common.
So it is not the story, nor the way it’s told, that is great here. It is the evolution and the characters’ dynamic that makes this movie so true, so coherent, but above all: so familiar… |
